• Hours - 40 + hours per week contract however, typical shifts work 4 days on, 4 days off. however other hours and patterns can be accommodated. The Business operates 24/7, 365 days per year.

About The Apprenticeship

Duration  - 10 Months, consisting of 4  weeks classroom based study ( based at our Preston base )  and In addition you will complete assignments and workbooks throughout the apprenticeship programme and will be provided with time to complete your training as per the apprenticeship requirements. You’ll work with our chosen training provider who will support your education journey with us and work with you to help you to achieve your potential.

The course commences start of september

Shifts- Outside of the classroom your shifts will operate on a 4 on,4 off basis, from our sites in the North West Salford or Preston.

The role- Working in partnership with the NHS and other care providers we take pride in the services offered by our caring, compassionate and friendly teams of trained, highly skilled Emergency Care Assistants/ urgent care assistants. ( ECA’s/UCA) . You will play a key role in the provision of high-quality care responding to a wide variety of situations including medical/ trauma related emergencies, inter-hospital transfers, urgent and none urgent hospital admissions. Our ECA’s works as part of a dedicated team including Ambulance Care Assistants, Urgent Care Assistants and qualified clinicians in order to provide patients with potentially life-saving care and transportation to hospital.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • To drive a range of UKEMS vehicles under emergency and urgent and normal driving conditions

  • Ensure that all patient report forms both electronic and paper-based are completed, additional paperwork may include police statements, coroners and solicitor statements

  • Ensure the safe transfer of patients to and from vehicles utilising appropriate equipment and manual handling techniques

  • Undertake a dynamic risk assessment on arrival at the scene of an incident or to support colleagues in this duty

  • Communicate with patients, relatives, colleagues, members of other emergency services, the public and other healthcare professionals

  • To carry out relevant vehicle and equipment checks ensuring that the vehicle is properly kitted, cleaned and stocked, faults or omissions reported and all appropriate recording procedures completed

  • To assist in ensuring the efficient use of medical supplies, maintaining adequate supplies and ensuring all clinical waste is disposed of.

  • To maintain timely communications with our operations centre

  • To respond as first responder to incidents where necessary within ECA scope of practice

What will you study ?
The training  includes moving and handling techniques, emergency first aid,  and safe driving techniques in emergency  ( blue light) and non emergency situations .

You will undertake a series of qualifications .The qualifications include:- 

  1. Level 3 Certificate in Ambulance Patient Care Services (Urgent Care Services)

  2. Level 3 Certificate in Emergency Response Ambulance Driving (CERAD)

  3. The Care Certificate 

  4. Level 2 Safeguarding and other mandatory qualifications as per the CSCF.

  • You will be be to work shift patterns which will include unsociable hours. We operate 24/7 , 365 days per year . You may sometimes be asked to work beyond your normal finishing time .

  • You will be able to stay calm and work under pressure

  • You will have the ability to handle sensitive situations in an assertive and tactful manner

  • ‎This post is physically demanding . You must be able to lift ( together with a colleague ) a minimum of c 11stone/ 70kgs
